Anthony Wright of Castrovalva looks at the low end

I would describe my bass style as filthy, very dirty, usually simple lines with low dirty grooves. I play pretty hard and use quite a lot of pitch-based effects as I have a lot of space to fill in our band since we have no guitarists. I love the feel of a slim necked four-string bass, it gives me all the range I need. If I ever want to venture higher or lower than it allows, then I use octave shifting pedals to get a gritty synthesised note. My first bass was a Washburn XB120, I only got it because it was black! I didn’t have a clue and I soon got rid of it for a much nicer Fender Precision that I still have to this day. My favourite bass ever to date is my custom Shuker four-string bass, it looks like something you’d find in a pawn shop and plays like my favourite Fender. The greatest bass player that ever lived is probably someone like Larry Graham, totally ahead of his time in terms of the sounds he was generating and the grooves he came up with were insane, he can make the most simple line totally stomping!
Basses Fender Precision, Fender Jazz, Shuker Custom, Shuker/Fender hybrid
Effects Darkglass B3K and Vintage, Fuzzrocious Rat Tail, Boss OC2, Digitech WH1 Whammy
Amps Ampeg PF500, Barefaced Super15
