I try to play to suit the band I am playing with at the moment, but most of the folks that I play with say that it sounds like I am using my fingers, but I actually use a pick. I do not play five- or six-string bass. Literally none of my favourite bass players did on any of my favourite bass songs. I like to keep it simple. Classic. I do not slap because the music we are playing does not call for it at all, in my opinion. And I am a strong believer that good taste outweighs skill about nine out of 10 times. Listen to that kick drum! Keep it interesting. Big syncopated riffs kick ass, but it’s also cool to form a tight groove with the drummer behind the riff. Have fun with it! My favourite bass ever to date is my 1973 Gibson Grabber: I’d be screwed without it. The tones I can coax out of that thing are perfect for my styles of playing. Plus it plays like shit in the best way possible. There is a huge bow in the neck, the bridge tears my hands to shreds, the neck has been glued back together, plus it’s spray painted and has the words ‘Eat Fuk’ carved into the back of it… and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It is literally perfect for me. I wish I had 10 of them.
