Interview: Shez Raja

Indo-jazz virtuoso Shez Raja talks creativity and inspiration and what we can expect from his upcoming London Bass Guitar Show 2017 appearance.

British-Asian bassist Shez hails from the Wirral, in the North-West of England. His first instrument was the violin, on which he was classically trained before finding his true passion in the electric bass. He studied music theory and Indian tabla drumming at Leeds College of Music before becoming a highly sought-after session bassist.

Shez then went on to form his own London-based group the Shez Raja Collective, touring the world with his exciting brand of bass-led Indo-jazz funk. The group has released five highly-acclaimed albums. Their latest record Gurutopia was released last year on US label Dot Time Records and features jazz legends Mike Stern and Randy Brecker.

Shez will be performing with his band on the Main Stage at the London Bass Guitar Show on Saturday 4 March.

“It’s a real honour to be playing at the show”, says Shez. “I love the event. There’s always such an incredible atmosphere and I’ve met some really great people there over the years. I’ll be there with my full international touring line-up and I’m really excited about performing in front of so many bass players and feeling the bass energy!”

The Shez Raja Collective are fabled for their thrilling live performances so this really is not one to be missed.

Shez will also be running a Masterclass at the show on Sunday 5 March.

“At the Masterclass I’m going to be talking about inspiration and demystifying the creative process. This is something I’m passionate about and is at the heart of my playing and writing. I’m going to be sharing with the group some practical and fun ideas to excite the mind, fuel the imagination and become more creatively alive. It will be relevant to everyone regardless of experience and playing style and I believe it will help people to achieve their musical and bass playing goals more quickly and feel more fulfilled and inspired in the process.”

Shez adds, “I’ll be bringing the band with me to the Masterclass too, to demonstrate some of these creativity concepts and play some tunes for everyone. I can’t wait.”

Neither can we!

Gurutopia is out now on Dot Time Records.
