Byron Lutiers’ bass basics

The secret of playing bass well, for me, is not caring: forgetting what you’ve learned and playing in the moment. My first bass was a four-string Yamaha RBX; my favourite bass ever to date is my 1971 Fender Precision. My bass heroes are Stuart Zender, Paul Jackson, Pino Palladino, Chuck Rainey, Flea, Stanley Clarke, Larry Graham, Willie Weeks and Stevie Wonder. If I could get the bass tone of any album ever released, I would choose Stuart Zender’s tone on The Return of the Space Cowboy, especially the song ‘Scam’. Bad-ass! Our new album Flesh and Blood is out now and we’re touring Europe, North America, Japan and Oz throughout this year.
