We recently introduced our brand-new bass tuition section, the place to come for low-frequency education, no matter what your playing ability, understanding of musical theory, preferred genre of music or career goals. We’ve divided our lessons into Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced level for easy reference, but do check out all three sections, no matter how experienced you are as a bassist. There’ll be something for everyone on every page. As well as the actual tuition, we’ve also included our Front Line columns from professional touring bass players, and our acclaimed Classic Albums page, where we break down the bass on an iconic record. Add all this up and there’s no better place to be, if bass is your passion. Here’s a little more on each of our new tutors.
Look out for the upcoming issue of Bass for the full tuition section, plus interviews, reviews, news and more in shops or online at www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk
Meet the Tutors
Beginner? Kickstart your journey to the top of the bass world with Steve Lawson!
Steve Lawson is the UK’s most celebrated solo bass guitarist. Across 17 years of touring, and 42 solo and collaborative albums, he’s built up a worldwide audience for his looping and processing approach to bass sound. Recent collaborators include Beardyman, Reeves Gabrels, Andy Gangadeen, Tanya Donelly, Divinity Roxx and Jonas Hellborg. He’s been teaching bass for over two decades, and lectures at universities and colleges across the globe. Victor Wooten once commented, “Steve Lawson is a brilliant musician. I’ve known about him and listened to him for many years. He may not be one of the most famous bassists – but he is definitely one of the most talented.” Who are we to argue?
Intermediate? Now you’re rolling with theory and techniques, it’s time to hit the next level with Stuart Clayton
Stuart Clayton has been a professional musician, writer and transcriber since 2002 and worked in almost every conceivable musical situation – function bands, cruise ship gigs, theatre shows and more. He spent four years recording and touring with Emerson, Lake & Palmer drummer Carl Palmer and has worked for BGM since issue 1. Since 2007 Stuart has headed the Bass Department at BIMM Bristol, where he teaches all degree course levels. He’s also worked as the Bass Guitar Technical Specialist for the Rockschool exam board. Stuart now runs Bassline Publishing, which publishes transcription books for legendary bassists such as Mark King, Marcus Miller, Stuart Hamm, Bernard Edwards, Stuart Zender and John Entwistle, and an acclaimed range of tuition books.
Philip Mann studied at Basstech, completing the London College of Music’s bachelor’s degree, and gained a master’s in performance before receiving a scholarship to study under Jeff Berlin at the Players School in Florida, and establishing himself as a bassist. Endorsed by Overwater and Vanderkley, he’s appeared in the West End and across Europe on several productions. His credits include recording at Sun Studios in Memphis, and with fusion guitarist Tolis Zavaliaris and the Big Band Metheny ensemble. He’s featured as a solo demo artist at the London Bass Guitar Show since 2012. Currently, he’s on the visiting faculty at the Players School and lectures for Scott’s Bass Lessons.
