Bassically speaking: Paul van Bruystegem

My bass heroes are – do you have a minute? – John Paul Jones, Lemmy, Roger Glover, Larry Graham, Donald Dunn, James Jamerson, Klaus Voorman, Jaco Pastorius, Charles Mingus, Jack Bruce… and so on. To me, the greatest bass player that ever lived was either John Entwistle or Willy Dixon. I downtune all my basses to C or D, or I use a baritone.

My favourite bass to date is my 68 Fender Mustang, short scale. If I could get the bass tone of any album ever released, I would choose The Who’s Live At Leeds. We’ve just finished two years of touring throughout Europe, so I want one week to relax and then we’ll start working on a new album. We’d like to record it in September at Sunset Studios, LA, where ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and Who’s Next were recorded, along with many other great records.
