My playing is rooted in the rock, funk and R&B of the 1960s and 70s. The musicians with whom I’ve collaborated over the years, in particular guitarist Morgan Burnham, have shaped my playing tremendously. The secret of playing bass well is developing not only technical ability but also a strong aesthetic sense. Trust yourself and love the music that you create. My first bass was a top of the bottom of line MIJ Fender Jazz with a cracked nut and broken jack covered in duct tape… the good old days when things were bad. My favourite bass ever to date is my 1989 Music Man Stringray. We’ve been together for 15 years and are pretty much joined at the hip. My bass heroes are Carol Kaye, Charlie Haden, Goerge Porter Jr., Chris Squire, Donald Dunn, Cliff Burton, Leland Sklar and Holger Czukay. The greatest bass player that ever lived was Charles Mingus, an interminable force as a player, composer and bandleader.
